On 29th October, Busoga Tourism Initiative (BTI) in conjunction with the Diocese of Busoga shall be holding a function at Kyando, Mayuge district in Eastern Uganda to both celebrate the life of Bishop James Hannington as a martyr and also launch this site as one of Busoga's tourism sites.
H.E the President of Uganda has agreed to grace the occasion and officially launch the site.
Bishop Hannington's Memorial site at Kyando was one of the three sites earmarked during the 1st Busoga Tourism and Cultural Expo in Jinja last year as one of the sites that need to be commissioned and promoted. The other ones were; Kagulu Rock which was successfully launched in May this year and the other is gazzetting Bukaleba Peninsula into a Game Reserve.
Previously, the Busoga Diocese has been commemorating this 29th day of October with a pilgrimage and prayers at Kyando annually, however, this year’s celebrations are expected to have a national character and vigor.
Bishop Hannington was actually the first Ugandan Christian Martyr. He was murdered a year before those of Namugongo. He was declared a Saint in 1958. Bishop Hannington's mission was to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ not only to Busoga but the entire Africa. Actually, he had been consecrated a Bishop of the East and Equatorial Africa in 1883 when he left England for Africa.
Therefore given this background, the Uganda’s tourism fraternity feels that this landmark life history of Bishop James Hannington must be celebrated even far beyond Busoga Diocese.
You’re all welcome.
