World Tourism Day, 27th September, is a global annual day of celebration where people world over join together to reflect on the importance and benefits that accrue from tourism. The event is promoted annually by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
In Uganda, the major celebrations will be held at Golf Course Grounds in Lira District (Northern Uganda) under the theme, “One Billion Tourists. One Billion Opportunities”. The celebrations will be presided over by the Right Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda, the Prime Minister of Uganda and this will give an opportunity to the people of Lira, Northern Uganda and the country at large to showcase the various tourism attractions & activities in the region.
The Prime Minister will also launch the National Tourism Portal and the Tourism Catalogue (Journey Through the Pearl) which were funded by UNDP.
UTB will work closely with the Ministry of Tourism to spearhead the preparations of World Tourism Day in collaboration with other tourism agencies including UWA, UWEC, CAA, HTTI and the Private sector through its umbrella organization – UTA, which will also play a major role in mobilizing the different private stakeholders and the tourism fraternity to actively participate in this year’s celebrations.
