Uganda Martyrs Day
Come and join the pilgrims at Namugongo and Munyonyo Martyrs' Shrines to commemorate the Uganda Martyrs' Day. A day on which thousands of International and local believers/pilgrims join to venerate the martyrs' faith.
Between 1885 and 1887, witnessed the death of 45 young men from various Christian denominations (22 Catholics and 23 Anglicans) on the orders of the then king of Buganda, Kabaka Mwanga. These young men died because of their Christian faith as the King felt that with the coming of the new religion and the rate at which his subjects were converting, would overthrow his kingship. Some followers of the traditional religion felt challenged by the new comers, the Moslems and the Christians.
After the Martyrs' Trail all visitors are urged to visit Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja, and other places like the Uganda Museum, the markets including Nakasero and Owino which display a variety of Ugandan fruits, vegetables and food stuffs. Cultural centres like Ndere Centre and the National Theatre, Ngamba Island, the source of the River Nile, Snake Park, shopping malls like Garden city, Uchumi and Nakumatt for upscale shopping are also some of the place to consider visiting while still in Uganda.
Uganda is set for the Martyrs Day on June 3 when millions from Africa and around the world descend on Kampala during this annual pilgrimage. It is probably the only one of its kind in Africa
